Study Questions
Pre-English Period
1-Provide as comprehensive a description as possible of the characteristics of Proto-European (sounds,grammar, words, etc) and explain which characteristics we can still see in modern English.
2-Provide as comprehensive a description as possible of the characteristics of Proto-Germanic (sounds,grammar, words, etc) and explain which characteristics we can still see in modern English.
3-What is Grimm’s Law? Explain what it is, how it works, its relationship to Verner’s Law and itssignificance.
4-Trace the linguistic family tree for Celtic languages. Identify all the Celtic languages, where theyare/were spoken, which ones are extinct, and explain their relationship to English and the influence theyhave had (if any) on English. Give examples if possible.
5-What language is the closest relative of English? Where is it spoken? How many people speak it? How does it relate to English? Find an original text in this language. Can you read it? What are some of the characteristics of this language?
6-What is Gothic? Where and when was it spoken? What makes it different from other Germaniclanguages? What languages are now spoken where (geographically speaking) Gothic was spoken? Whatdoes this tell you about language change, etc?
7-What are the four types of languages based on their morpho-syntactic characteristics? Give an exampleof a language for each. Where does English fit in?
8-Explain the difference between a substratum and a suprastratum. Were Celtic languages a substratumor a suprastatum in Latin? In English? What influence did they have? What evidence is there today oftheir presence (not just on the language).
9-Why did the Germanic tribes invade the British Isles? What groups did come? Where did they comefrom? What do you know about them?
10-Provide a description of the linguistic situation in the British Isles before the Germanic invasion.
11-What was the political situation like in the British Isles just before and during the Germanic invasion?
12-What writing systems, if any were used during this time period? For what languages? What role, if any,did written language play.
13-Are there any literary texts from this time period? Are there any legends?
